Sheep

The flock consists of 500 Sarda sheep.

Feeding

Sheep have a forage based diet with a supplement of grains.

Diet composition

Forages:

- Pasture

- Alfalfa hay

- Mixed hay

Concentrates:

- Barley grains

- Corn grains

- Faba beans

Whole forages and grains are produced on the farm. Grazed grass is the most important component of the diet.

In hot summer and dry cold winter periods hay supplies is required together with a mix of concentrates produced in farm fields or coming from other organic farms nearby.

No commercial feeds are used.

Grains are milled in the farm mill and dosed to fit animal requirements.

Barley and corn grains are energy concentrates while faba beans have a large protein content.

In spring when grass production is abundant the integration is based on energy concentrates, whereas in winter when grass is scarce, a larger quote of protein grains is needed.

Reproduction

The birthing's period is from October to spring.

Every year about 100 ewe lambs are grown to replace the elder ewes.

Rams are bought from qualified farms to improve the genetics of the flock.

Lambs

Young lambs are natural milk fed only.

Sheepfold

Sheep are housed during the night in wintertime. In warm periods they are raised on pastures also in the night.

Inside sheepfold ewes are fed and milked. Our sheepfold has been recently built in order to meet  livestock's hygienic and ethological needs.

Milking

Ewes are mechanically milked in a dedicated space.

This assures high standard of hygiene working conditions.

An appropriate milking procedure is important for animal welfare and for the quality of milk.

Soon after milking, the milk is put in refrigerated tanks and then taken to the dairy.

Animal welfare

One of the basic principles of organic farming is special care for animal welfare and consumer protection.

Rearing techniques, pasturage, housing, appropriate milking procedures and good man-animal relationships are ways to fit animal biological and ethological requirements.

Appropriate husbandry conditions reduces stress and improves immune defenses.
